Canal Crossing Attracts Young Wave to Hamden

Posted on by Kyle Del Balso

Summer in Hamden is a great time to relax at the Canal Crossing at Whitneyville West, but for its staff it has been their busiest, renting new units coming online. Since its opening in August of 2017, the owners have completed four of the seven buildings, with the final completion set for early 2020. Currently at a 100% occupancy rate for the first four buildings, residents have enjoyed the long list of perks the Canal Crossing offers, including air conditioning, a walk in closest, an in-unit washer and dryer, and a private balcony or patio.

In addition to the beautiful apartments, the complex on 380 Mather Street offers a clubhouse, saltwater swimming pool, 24-hour fitness center and pet park. Close to the Sleeping Giant as well as 2.4 miles from New Haven, the apartments at Canal Crossing are a hot commodity. According to Dana Coughlin, Community Manager for the complex, the average age of the residents are millennials ages 35-45.

At least 20% of the units in each building are being rented under the affordable housing program, per the requirements of the Hamden’s Planning and Zoning Commission. Town officials are delighted to see the influx of young members into the Hamden community “As we expected, this project is not only impactful in terms of tax revenue; it is bringing in new residents. This is driving great developer interest in the Dixwell/Mather area,” stated Dale Kroop, Director of Economic & Neighborhood Development. Building five, scheduled to open in August, is currently 55% leased. Building seven is scheduled to open in October/November. Building six is projected to be ready in spring 2020.
